How to Choose the Right Lifting Belt

The right lifting belt — more formally, a webbing sling — depends on three things: the working load limit (WLL) you need, the angle you’ll be lifting at, and the material being handled. Get any one of those wrong and you either risk an unsafe lift or pay for far more capacity than the job needs.

What Is a Lifting Belt?

A lifting belt is a flat, woven textile sling used to cradle and lift a load, usually in combination with a crane, hoist or forklift attachment. Most are woven from polyester, valued for its low stretch and good resistance to UV and moisture; nylon slings offer more elasticity and shock absorption, which suits dynamic or jarring lifts; polypropylene is lighter and cheaper but generally lower in strength and durability, so it’s used for lighter-duty work.

A widely used industry colour-coding convention (based on the EN 1492-1 standard for textile slings) marks the working load limit by webbing colour: violet for 1 tonne, green for 2 tonnes, yellow for 3 tonnes, grey for 4 tonnes, red for 5 tonnes, brown for 6 tonnes, blue for 8 tonnes, and orange for 10 tonnes. This is a helpful visual reference on-site, but the sling’s rated label and tag should always be the final word on its actual capacity.

Common Types of Lifting Belts

  • Flat (standard) webbing sling — a single flat strap with reinforced loop eyes at each end; the most common general-purpose type.
  • Endless (round loop) webbing sling — a continuous loop of webbing, useful for choker hitches and for spreading wear across the sling by rotating the loop.
  • Sling with soft or heavy-duty eyes — reinforced eye sections for use with hooks or shackles on heavier loads.
  • Round slings — a related but distinct product: load-bearing yarns protected inside a woven outer sleeve, often used where extra flexibility around irregular loads is needed.

Key Selection Criteria

Start with the working load limit your job actually requires, then apply a margin — webbing slings are typically manufactured with a safety factor around 7:1 against breaking strength, but that factor is built into the WLL rating itself, so never load a sling beyond its stated WLL regardless of the safety factor behind it.

Sling angle matters more than most people expect: as the angle between the sling legs and the horizontal decreases, the effective load on each leg increases sharply, even though the load itself hasn’t changed. A two-legged sling rated for a given WLL at a 90° (vertical) lift can lose a significant portion of that capacity once the legs are splayed out at a shallow angle — this is one of the most common causes of sling overload on site, so the intended rigging angle should always be factored into the sling selection, not just the raw load weight.

Beyond WLL and angle, match the material to the environment: polyester for general outdoor and UV-exposed use, nylon where shock-loading is likely, and check chemical compatibility if the load or the environment involves solvents, acids or high heat, since these can degrade webbing fibres. For loads with sharp edges or corners, use edge protection sleeves or corner pads — an unprotected webbing sling can be cut or abraded very quickly against a sharp edge.

Inspection and Safe Use

Before every use, check the sling for cuts, fraying, embedded debris, chemical staining, UV degradation (a chalky or brittle feel), and damage to the stitching or eyes. Never knot a webbing sling to shorten it, never drag a loaded sling across rough or abrasive surfaces, and always keep the sling’s identification tag legible — it carries the WLL, material and manufacture details you need for safe use. Slings should be stored away from direct sunlight, moisture and chemical exposure, and retired immediately once damage is found rather than kept "for light duty."

Choosing the Right One: A Quick Checklist

  • Confirm the actual load weight and add an appropriate margin below the sling’s rated WLL.
  • Account for the sling angle you’ll actually rig at, not just the vertical load weight.
  • Match the material (polyester, nylon, polypropylene) to the environment and load type.
  • Use edge protection for loads with sharp corners or abrasive surfaces.
  • Inspect before every lift, and retire any sling showing cuts, fraying or chemical damage.
