Window Glass Types and Prices: A Buyer's Guide

"Glass for my windows" sounds like one product, but it almost never is. Float, toughened, laminated, double-glazed, Low-E — each is a different product with a different price, and the wrong pick is expensive to undo once it's installed. Here's what each type actually does, what drives its price, and how to choose.

The main types, and what each is actually for

  • Clear float glass — the baseline. Cheapest option, fine for standard low-risk windows where strength and safety codes aren't a factor.
  • Tinted / reflective glass — a coloured or reflective coating cuts some heat and glare for a moderate step up in price over clear float.
  • Toughened (tempered) glass — heat-treated for strength; breaks into small granules rather than sharp shards, and is required by code for many high-rise and public-facing applications.
  • Laminated glass — two or more panes bonded with a plastic interlayer; holds together even when cracked, used for safety, sound reduction, and security glazing.
  • Insulated Glass Units (IGU) / double glazing — two panes with a sealed air or gas gap between them, used for thermal insulation and noise reduction.
  • Low-E (low-emissivity) coated glass — a microscopically thin coating that blocks heat transfer while keeping visible light in, popular on facades to cut air-conditioning load.
  • Back-painted / lacquered glass — opaque coloured glass used decoratively for partitions, walls, and cladding (the same product used on the Mumbai Metro station glazing).

What actually drives the price

  • Thickness — every extra millimetre adds cost.
  • Processing — toughening, laminating, and IGU assembly are each an extra manufacturing step, not just a material choice.
  • Coatings and interlayers — Low-E coatings and coloured/acoustic interlayers cost more than clear.
  • Size and cutting complexity — large single panes and custom shapes cost more per square foot than standard sizes.
  • Installation complexity — framing type, site access, and height all affect the final bill beyond the glass itself.

Indicative price tiers

Relative order, cheapest to most expensive, for a standard size and thickness:

Back-painted / lacqueredDecorative partitions, cladding₹₹₹

How to choose

  • Home windows, general use → toughened or laminated for safety.
  • Road-facing home, or need quiet → laminated or acoustic IGU.
  • Office or commercial facade → Low-E combined with an IGU, to manage both heat and energy cost.
  • Retail partition, reception wall, decorative surface → back-painted glass.
